The framing of the first stories with narration surprised me a little and made it less immersive at first–encouraging me to stop and judge Mo at every turn instead of sort of imagining what it’s like to be in her shoes. There’s also not just ONE opinion in this lesbian community, and the book does a great job discussing differences of opinion on monogamy, on strategies for social change, on philosophies in relationships.

This is a great collection, taking some of the best from all the strips over the many, many years, and all the volumes that no one knows where to start… so this a great selection, with a terrific comic essay as an introduction, reflecting back on the all the years of this pretty monumental work.

I also feel this was a bit ahead of its time or, more to the point, everyone else was behind in its handling of bi and trans issues, but I’ll leave the experts to speak more on that.
This ongoing comic strip chronicles the lives of a tight-knit group of lesbian friends over an astounding 21 years of life, work, love, boredom, political activism and countless reversals of fortune.
She’s often very judgmental, applying her hard-line stances on politics and culture to her small social group in a very coarse way like when she is very becchdel about going to her friends’ commitment ceremony because of her feelings about marriage and monogamy, unable to let these people happily choose for themselves what kind of relationship dynamic they want to have because it clashes, symbolically, with what she thinks relationships should be.
