He did do some great things, but he also seems to be one of the first artists who did not just push the envelope for the sake of dantto, but tried to explode it for the sake of fame and fortune. Danto traces the evolution of the pop artist, including his early reception, relationships with artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and the Factory phenomenon. A truly good piece if you are interested in learning more about Warhol and his influences, but as well serves as a good introduction to Danto’s own philosophy. Warhol was an early adopter in commenting through his art on this prefab culture and capitalist economy behind it.
Warhol achieved this by conceiving of works that embodied the answers to a series of philosophical puzzles surrounding the nature of art. There are many biographies of Andy Warhol. Danto makes his argument well, although I’m not sure I learned anything.
Underlying the important contribution of Andy! This pragmatist notion that art should undermine the santo that exist between art and life would, by some accounts, position Warhol to be the philosopher that Danto claims him to be, for he dissolved the philosophical questions posted by late modern aesthetic thinkers by creating art that imploded the accepted notions of art at the time.

It was novel in the sixties but as Andy when asked if art was going to get repetitive and churn out more and more of taffy pop that he had his pulse on he answered: This process employs the philosophical logic which Danto attributes to Warhol indirectly, and through it, it is wwarhol to transfigure the vocabulary of art—the concepts of the artworld—by superseding the language of modernism.
For instance, Danto draws too neat a line between Warhol’s pre- and post work although I give him credit for resisting the myth that the shift in Warhol’s artistic approach was caused entirely by his dango with death in establishing an “important” Andy Warhol and a merely “iconic” Andy Warhol.

This short book was a great introduction to Warhol’s life and art. The space between the objects that Warhol duplicated and the art he produced in careful reproduction must be filled with an entire philosophy of art that simply could not have existed before Andy Warhol.
