I myself learned calculus in much the same way as it is presented in this book, only a century later. Not only that, Martin Gardener wrote an amazing preface and reviewed the entire book. About this particular edition, print quality is poor. The author provides some examples practicing which gets the concepts ingrained in the readers’ mind. No trivia or quizzes yet. Calculus made easy was a fun, easy, and elegant transition from simple algebra into the world of calculus.
Calculus Made Easy has been a classic introduction to the subject ever since it was first published by Silvanus P. This book served as a good reminder to what I had learned at school and reads in an enjoyable manner.
It’s been pointed out by others that Martin Gardner’s changes for the edition are of dubious value, and I agree.
I would read in one until I couldn’t go any farther, then I would read in the other up to the same subject point. Nevertheless the edition I read, which incidentally I downloaded for nothing from the Internet Archive because it’s out of copyright, was very readable and it’s antiquated style only served to enhance my enjoyment.

Heck, Thompson wrote while mainstream analysis was still being worked out. So highly recommended to a bright high-schooler or baffled undergrad, ideally to be followed by A Primer of Infinitesimal Analysisif you can convince people that you don’t need the standard analysis curriculum.
