Garcia Marques immediatly assumed that she was trying to cover a lover. The material has been so cleverly arranged that the narration picks up in emotional impact as the “investigation” develops, and the story finishes off with a visceral climax that leaves you feeling as if you had been punched in the solar plexus.

The Vicario brothers are not murderers, it is the habits and customs of their society that really killed Nasar. When he is fingered for taking the virginity of a non-whore, any reader would believe in his guilt. The non-linear story, told by an anonymous narrator, begins with the morning of Santiago Nasar’s death. The more that is learned, the less is understood, and as the story races to its inexplicable conclusion, an entire society–not just a pair of murderers—is put on trial.
